McElroy-Minister Building Heads For New Owner, Fixup
By Brian R. Ball

Some notable names in Columbus commercial real estate will purchase and renovate the McElroy-Minister office building at 141 E. Town St.

Calgary Real Estate Development Co., a partnership between real estate appraiser Samuel D. Koon and attorney Jim Havens, will lead redevelopment of the 20,000 square-foot building at Town and South Fourth streets.

Havens said closing on the $1.6 million purchase of the building could come as soon as March 5. Abbot & Abbot Architects will take the lead on the planned $200,000 to $300,000 in renovations, expected to be done in October.

Havens' six attorney law firm, Havens Willis LLC, will join Koon's appraisal business, Samuel D. Koon & Associates, and Kagay & Schellhaas CPAs as owners and occupants of the building. About 8,000 square feet will be available for lease to other tenants.

Havens' law firm and affiliated Cardinal Title Insurance Agency will sublease the 6,500 square feet the firms now occupy at the Midland Insurance Building on East Broad Street.

Wayne Harer of Continental Real Estate Cos. marketed the building on behalf of its owner, McMin Realty Co. Insurance broker McElroy-Minister, a division of Acordia of Ohio, plans to move into the Smith Brothers Hardware Co. building downtown this summer.
